Peter Carter joined the Allegri as second viola for a charming and little-known Mozart Quintet - which, he said, he only played himself for the first time last year, during the Allegri's appearance at the Dartington Festival. Of course, on this occasion, as second viola, he had a completely different experience of the work.
This was followed by a Brahms Quartet, and then the Allegri returned with both Peter and Bruno for Schonberg's Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night). The silence at the end of the performance spoke volumes for the impact of this surprisingly lyrical piece, as did the thunderous applause which followed the silence.
